Moonstone History & Symbolism
The history of Moonstone is rich with mystery and myth. Moonstone’s name originates from its pearly and opalescent luster; it appears to glow like the moon. The ancient Romans believed moonstone was born from solidified rays of the sun. Both the Romans and Greeks associated the stone with their lunar gods and goddesses. In India, it is regarded as a holy, magical gemstone and also regarded as ‘dream stones’ which bring the wearer beautiful visions at night. In Arabic countries, women often wear moonstones sewn out of sight into their garments because moonstone is a symbol of fertility in their culture.
What is Moonstone?
Moonstone is a variety of feldspar that forms in thin layers. As light penetrates between the layers, it is refracted and scattered in many directions to create its luminosity. Labradorite is another feldspar and similar to moonstone. This glow is known as ‘adularescence’.
Not all moonstone that is sold as moonstone is genuine moonstone. Some of the really opal looking moonstone, free from any imperfections, is actually “opalite“, a man made glass. Real moonstone is natural and will usually have slight imperfections and inclusions such as black spots.
